AREA SCHOOL FAIR Premier's Tribute
The Premier (Mr. Cosgrove) paid a tribute to the teaching staff of Tasmania, when opening the Area School fair at Lilydale on Saturday. About 80 teachers had joined the fighting services and that had placed an extra bur den on those who remained. The response was very pleasing. Sixty former teachers who had married, had resumed teaching duties for the duration of the war.
Mr. Cosgrove stressed the need for paying attention to education. The young people, he said, must be taught to think for themselves so that they will be fitted to accept responsibility and to adapt themselves to changing conditions in the future.
One of the reasons we are fighting to-day is for the right of free thinking. Peoples of Germany and occupied countries were not being allowed to think.
Mr. Cosgrove said that Tasmania led the Commonwealth in Area Schools. Visitors from other states had been much impressed with what was being done here. According to departmental information available to him, the standard of domestic arts at Lilydale was the highest in the state. The standard of woodwork was also very high.
Mr. L. A. Procter, M.L.C., who introduced the Premier, paid a tribute to the work of the head teacher (Mr. H. Nicholls) and the school staff. In the trades section, furniture was being made for the proposed Yolla Area School.
The visitors, who included Mrs. Cosgrove, Mrs. T. H. Davies, Mr. J. L. Madden (Hon. Minister) and Mrs. Madden, Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Procter and Mr. E. R. Howroyd, M.H.A., were welcomed by the head teacher.
