Lilydale(From Our Own Correspondent.)A social evening was held in the Druids' Hall on Saturday. 30th. August, to assist towards paying the cost of the horses used by the bush nurse.
An Item was given by Mr. B. W, Mitchell, and a part song, which was very much enjoyed, was given by Mesdames Power and S. J. Arnold, Misses Clark and Power, and Messrs Roy Bardenhagen and Mitchell. The rest of the evening was given up to dancing, which was thoroughly enjoyed by the large number present. The music for the dance was supplied by Mrs. Power and Mr. H. J. Hudson, and Mr. Arthur Miller was M.C.
Mr. B. W. Mitchell kindly donated some chocolates which were sold by auction, which materially added to the takings. Mesdames Power and S. J. Arnold, Misses E. Wilson and M. Power, and Mr. Mitchell worked hard to make the evening a success. The net takings amounted to £5/14/7, which with 6/6/5 from a previous entertainment make a balance in hand of £12/10/-. leaving only £3/19/- to be made up for the amount paid for the horse.
At the Lilydale Police Court on Friday last (before Justices B. W. Turner and H. Haas, junr.) William Shegog and K. A. Jones were each ordered to pay 9/- court costs for allowing cattle to stray on the road at Dilston.
Chas. McKay, of Rocherlea, was charged with driving without lights at Rocherlea. He did not appear and was convicted on the evidence of Trooper Johnson, and ordered to pay the court costs, amounting to 9 /-. Shegog, Jones and McKay in addition, had each to pay 4s. witness' expenses.
Aubrey MeKercher, of Lilydale, was also charged with driving without lights at Lilydale. He was ordered to pay the costs amounting to 9s. John Power, Junr.. was charged with damaging the furniture in a hut belonging to F. Procter. He pleaded not guilty. After a considerable amount of evidence had been given he was found guilty and order to pay the coats amounting to 13s.
