Lilydale Council LILYDALE-SCOTTSDALE ROAD
At the monthly meeting of the Lilydale Council on Monday, Cr. G. S. Targett suggested that an effort be made to improve a number of the bad corners on the Lilydale-Scottsdale road. He pointed out that some of the corners are very sharp and dangerous, and it should be possible to improve them by using a bulldozer. It was decided that the Overseer (Mr. W. Flynn) inspect the road in company with Mr. Walter Arnold, and then submit a report to the Council.
It was decided to ask the Director of Public Works (Mr. B. C. Sharp) and a representative of the Agricultural Bank to visit Newnham to discuss road drainage from the Mayfield Estate at Rocherlea.
The Director of Public Works will also be asked to expedite the survey for the widening of the State Highway through Newnham. Cr. Woodland said a number of block holders wish to erect their front fences, and the new boundary line must be fixed before the fences are erected.
The Overseer reported that satisfactory progress is being made with the widening of the Lilydale-Lalla road. A bulldozer, a loader and two lorries are engaged on this work. One deviation had been partly completed, and nearly 2,000 cubic yards of filling have been put on the deviation. A number of telephone poles will have to be moved back off the road.
Cr. Archer was authorised to endeavour to have the work of gravelling the Swan Bay Road expedited. Mr. P. A. Arnold wrote asking for the road leading to his property on the Brown Mountain to be repaired as he intends to cart building material and farm equipment on to the property. The work was left in the hands of Cr. Kelp.
The Premier (Mr. R. Cosgrove) wrote in connection with the proposed extension of electricity to the properties of Messrs. Cornish, Shegog, Barnard and Garcia, at Underwood, and he forwarded the comments of the Commissioner of the Hydro-Electric Department. The clerk pointed out that the Premier had misunderstood the position. It was decided to write to Mr. Cosgrove and explain the whole position.
The Premier also stated that when the Windermere and Woodlawn extension is completed the following extensions will be carried out: To Bangor Post Office, North Lilydale to Mathewson and Brown's, and then Tunnel to Lebrina.
In reply to a request from the Lilydale Council, the Launceston City Council has approved of the proposal that the City Engineer (Mr. L. H. Bird) should confer with the consulting engineers of the Lilydale Council for the purpose of preparing a report regarding a joint sewerage scheme for Mowbray and the Newnham district. The report will serve as a basis for discussion only and does not commit either Council. The Warden pointed out that co-operation between the Councils will be to the benefit of all concerned.
The Secretary of the Water, Sewerage and Drainage Board advised that plans, showing the position of reservoirs and mains of the Northern Regional water supply in the Municipality, will be available in the near future.
Rev. H. C. Biggs, Secretary of the Lilydale Ministers' Fraternal Association, wrote asking for information on the following: (1) Is it a fact that organised sport is being played in the Municipality on Sundays? (2) The power of the Council in regard to recreation al reserves ; (3) Has the Council taken any steps to prevent the use of reserves for organised sport on Sundays. The council clerk was asked to forward the information asked for.
The Superintendent of the Telephone Branch (Mr. G. E. Brownless) advised that it is hoped to instal a full length public telephone cabinet, with coin attachment, at Newnham about June, 1950. The installation will be completed shortly after the establishment of the new exchange at Mowbray.
A long list of outstanding rates was tabled, and the clerk was authorised to take steps to collect them.
It was decided to apply to the Treasury for permission to raise a loan of £1,200 during 1950/1951 for drainage at Newnham. The Warden report ed that a public meeting had been held at Dilston during the previous month to consider the purchase of a Recreation Ground for the Dilston, Windermere and Swan Bay districts. The meeting favoured the proposal and a number of sites were suggested. Councillors Archer, Box and Woodland were appointed to interview the owners of five proposed sites and submit a report to the next meeting.
