ANZAC DAY
The monthly meeting of the Lilydale branch of the R.S.S.I.L.A. was held on Wednesday evening, Mr. W. Wilson being in the chair. [...] Lengthy correspondence was tabled in connection with the celebration of Anzac Day, and the secretary (Mr. E. E. Bennett) reported that all arrangements were well in hand. Letters were received from the school teachers of the municipality, including the Karoola Convent, advising the number of children who would be present, and splendid entries were received for the flag race for the Anzac shield.
In addition to the children from schools within the municipality, it was decided to entertain those from the Lower Turner's Marsh, Piper's River, and Piper's Brook schools providing they arranged their own transport. The head-teacher of the Hillwood school had expressed a wish to bring his school children to Lilydale, and it was decided also to entertain them. The children from Lisle school will be conveyed to Nabowla by motor lorry, and then go on to Lilydale by train. They will be taken home on their return to Nabowla at night.
The Commissioner for Railways (Mr. F. P. St. Hill) forwarded two scales of cheap fares for children and adults between Scottsdale and Launceston on Anzac Day, and it was decided to accept one, which is slightly lower than last year. The treasurer (Mr. R. T. Bardenhagen) pointed out that a fairly large sum had been paid to the Railway Department last year, as more children had travelled by train than in previous years. The offer of the South Launceston and Lilydale Salvation Army bands to provide the music at the united memorial service was accepted with thanks. It was left to the secretary to arrange a meeting of the local clergy and the Salvation Army to draw up the order of service for the united memorial service, which will be held on the recreation ground at 11 a.m.
Mr. E. D. Weston was appointed chairman of the sports committee, and this committee agreed to hold a working bee next Saturday afternoon to get everything in readiness for the children's sports. The catering arrangements for the children and visitors were left in the hands of Mr. R. L. Bardenhagen, who has successfully carried out this job for many years. It was resolved to invite the ladies who assisted in previous years to again help in preparing the meals for the children. The secretary reported that permission had been given for the use of the show building and the recreation ground.
