NEWS FROM COUNTRY DISTRICTS LILYDALE. - An American tea to assist the funds of the forthcoming Paddy's market for the Church of England was held in the Druids' Hall on Wednesday afternoon. The proceeds were £7/16/-. Items were given by Mesdames R. L. Bardenhagen, R. A. Brooks, L. W. Dornauf, J. Manzoney and F. Littlejohn.
Community singing was conducted by Mr. H. Nicholls, with Miss F. Pitchford at the piano. Mesdames A. von Schill and A. E. Richardson conducted a stall, and Mesdames A. J. Cassidy, F. Ferguson. H. Hope, F. Littlejohn. O'Toole, V. French and Miss R. Pitchford were in charge of refreshments.
VP-Day was celebrated at Lilydale by a combined thanksgiving service in the Druids' Hall. There was a large attendance, visitors being present from outlying districts. Those taking part were the Warden (Cr. L. A. Procter, ML.C.), Mr. R. L. Bardenhagen (president R.S.L.), Rev. F. Littlejohn (Church of England), Mr. S. T. Lucas (Methodist), Captain Roberts and Envoy Ackerly (Salvation Army). Miss F. Pitchford was pianist. The address was given by Rev. F. Littlejohn. At the close of the service Mr. Fred Franklin sounded the Last Post. Services were also held at 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. at the Church of England and at 7 p.m. in the Salvation Army.
Visitors from Bangor, Karoola. Lebrina, Lower Turners Marsh, North Lilydale, Lalla, Retreat, Tunnel, Turners Marsh and Underwood helped to swell the huge crowd at the victory ball in the show building on Thursday night. A bonfire was made in the recreation ground and the effigy of Hirohito burnt. The net proceeds of the function, about £25, are for the Returned Soldiers' Memorial Fund. A chocolate waltz was won by Mr. A. Cameron and a Monte Carlo by Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Viney. A case of ale was won by Mr. A. A. Dornauf. Music was supplied by Gooding's orchestra, extras being played by Messrs. J. L. Swain and W. M. Glover. Mr. Thos. Whiting was M.C. A committee of ladies dispensed supper.
An interesting address on the widespread activities of the Red Cross Society was given by the chairman of the northern division (Mr. G. W. Fulton) at the annual meeting of the Lilydale branch. Mr. Fulton gave many side lights on the social welfare work, and pointed out that it was essential to continue the work of the Red Cross for many years to come. The president (Mrs. L. A. Procter) presided and there was a large attendance. The report disclosed a successful year. £185/15/5 having been raised, and assistance had been given to the Lady Clark Children's Library Fund and the UNRRA appeal. Appreciation was expressed for the help received from the Lilydale branch of the T.P.O., the Younger Set and collectors.
Officers elected were: President, Mrs. L. A. Procter; vice-presidents, Mesdames R. L. Bardenhagen, H. Hope and H. Wilson; Joint treasurers, Mrs. A. Power and Miss M. Bardenhagen; secretary Mrs. W. Wilson; auditor, Mr. A. E. Kerkham. The president appealed for the help of the younger members of the community in the work of the Red Cross during the coming year. Supper was provided.
