The Lilydale branch of the Country Women's Association has sent Christmas cakes and -canteen orders to men and women of the district who are serving in the Forces. The cakes were made by members of the branch, and the ingredients and canteen orders cost over £16. Letters have been received from soldiers serving in forward areas that they have already received their cakes, which were very much appreciated.LILYDALE (1943, December 31). LILYDALE CHRISTMAS 1937 POLIO & SALVOS
From Our Own Correspondent
The Christmas holidays passed off very quietly at Lilydale as most residents had family parties in their own homes.
Owing to the infantile paralysis epidemic many people refrained from visiting the seaside and other parts of the state.
On Christmas morning the Salvation Army Band, assisted by Mesdames R. A. Brooks and R. L. Bardenhagen and Mr. H. Kendall, of the Methodist Church, commenced carol singing about 4 a.m. They visited the homes of most of the residents, and their efforts were much appreciated. During the morning the carol slngers were entertained to light refreshmentsLILYDALE. (1937, December 31). North-Eastern Advertiser (Scottsdale, Tas. : 1909 - 1954), p. 3. LILYDALE (1913) BOXING DAY OUTINGS
The Christmas holidays passed off very quietly at Lilydale. The usual church services were held on Christmas Day. Boxing Day was a perfect summer's day, and most of the local residents went picnicking. A fair number went to the Denison Gorge. Another detachment preferred to climb Mount Arthur, and although the ascent was rather trying, owing to the heat, those who reached the summit were rewarded by a fine view, the atmosphere being very clear. A large number made a trip to the mouth of the Piper, where a sports meeting, organised by Lebrina and Piper residents, was held. The programme included a trial of hunters, horseracing on the beach, a greasy pole contest, and a swimming match. There was a large attendance. Everyone seemed out for pleasure, and it certainly was the most enjoyable and amusing sports meeting the writer has had the pleasure of attending.Lilydale. (1913, January 1).
