Some years ago Nabowla was known as Lisle Road, because of its proximity to the once rich Lisle goldfield, seven miles distant. In years past good alluvial gold was obtained here, over 20 tons of the precious metal being secured. A few fossickers still make a precarious living on the gold field, but a good deal of gold is still won by the Lisle Alluvial Gold Mining Coy.
The chief pursuits around Nabowla, are farming, dairying, and sawmilling. Messrs J. W. Gofton, J. T. Carins, Hudson (Lisle), and Peddle being successfully engaged in the latter industry, the last named running a good, up to-date mill about 2½ miles from Nabowla. Amongst the most successful and prominent dairymen and farmers— most of whom combine these industries - are Messrs J. Fullbrook, whose farm embraces some 200 acres of perfectly cleared good land, Peddle, H. Blackburn, J. Carins, J. Wadley, C. Allanby, J. Bennett, C. Watson, C. Sturgess, C. Wing, D. Davis, and Gillespie. Cream from many of these suppliers finds its way to the Scottsdale Factory or to the Cool Storage Coy (Launceston).
Mr Fullbrook's holding is a very large one embracing something like 8000 acres in the aggregate, much of which is devoted to sheep raising, some 600 sheep being pastured. Much of the land around Nabowla can only be classed as second grade, but apparently the bush country produces some very fine timber, whilst the river flats, though not extensive are very rich and produce good crops of hay oats and potatoes. One saw a nice plot of greenstuff near the bridge over the clear-flowing Little Forester, quite 3ft high, even at this early season.
The most prominent landmark here is Blue Hill, which under the euphonious name of Blumont gives its name to the siding, some 2½ miles distant This mountain is very appropriately named, the shadows resting on it when shrouded by passing clouds being as blue as indigo, which color deepens to a beautiful purple towards sunset, especially in autumn. The writer noticed that on the western shoulder of this densely wooded hill, settlement had been carried out almost to the summit, as evidenced by the dead timber.
One noticed that farming operations were proceeding apace, quite a number of plough-teams being afield. Some new clearing being also under way. In this direction much developmental work remains to be done
The State School, under the efficient and satisfactory care of Mr Ray Solomon, is attended by about 60 scholars whose parents speak in high terms of praise as to the manner in which Mr Solomon "teaches the young idea how to shoot." In Spiritual matters the Anglicans are represented by a nice little building on the village, whilst the Presbyterians have erected a nice little edifice for worship about a mile from the station.
Fairly good fishing can be got in the Little Forester, which is only a few hundred yards from the station, whilst quail and rabbits can be got in numbers quite handy
Residents of Nabowla enjoy a good mail service, the Post and Telegraph office being conducted at the station by the popular officer-in-charge (Mr T. Walsh), whilst domestic requirements are well catered for at the well-stocked general store of G. E. Smith & Son. Nabowla (1919, October 3).
