OBITUARY MRS. WILLIAM WATTS
Mrs. William Watts, who died at her home, Golconda, was an old and respected respected resident of the district. Mrs. Watts, who was formerly Miss Eliza Jane Smith, was born in Victoria in 1854. She married Mr. William Watts, also of Victoria, and they spent the first few years of their married life on the mainland.
With her husband and two eldest children, she came to Tasmania over 60 years ago, and settled on the Lisle goldfields during the gold rush. Mrs. Watts was the first woman to arrive at the Lisle goldfields and could re late interesting facts of the gold rush.
About 18 years ago Mr. and Mrs. Watts left Lisle and returned to the main land for a short period before finally settling at Golconda, where Mr. Watts died 13 years ago at the age of 86 years.
There was a family of two daughters, Mrs. Langley, Targa, and Mrs. Kelly, Golconda, and eight sons, Messrs. George, Walter, Alfred (Launceston), Victor and David (Nabowla), Nelson and Arthur (Golconda), and Ben (Lisle), all of whom survive her, and about 40 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
A large and representative gathering attended the funeral. The services at the church and graveside were conducted by Rex. R. H. Pethybridge, rector of Scottsdale.
The carriers were Messrs. Mahnken, A. Pearton, C. Partridge, and L. Mahnken. Many beautiful floral tributes were received, including wreaths from "D" Company, Elphin Camp, and mechanics and carpenters of Patons and Baldwins. The chief mourners were Messrs. G.. W., A., N. ., A., D., and V. Watts (sons), Mrs. I. Kelly (daughter), Mr. T. Kelly (son-in-law). Mesdames V. Watts, D. Watts, G. Watts, W. Watts (daughters-in-law).
