After 20 years of what he described as "chasing tourists round the state," Mr. T. Stancombe believes that many tourists go away knowing a "Jolly sight more about Tasmanian history than most of the natives." "We don't delve into our early history as we should," he said during his address at the Launceston Rotary Club yesterday. "Yet there is a great wealth of knowledge that could be obtained."
I found this little 1934 note by serendipity while searching for other stuff on Trove. I hope Mr Stancombe would be pleased with the progress of both tourism and history research, amateur and professional, since his day. It can always be better and we could wish more people really cared to record the stories and photos and artifacts as times change and people and their irreplaceable memories pass.
