These reports from 1947 evoke the culture of those times. I just read a comment by Grace Slick who said she was brought up in the simpler, straight-laced 1950s - felt like the Victorian era - and then the 1960s saw it all exploded, by television, rock music, changing values, the anti-war movement, contraception, urbanisation, you know the story.
Not often you find five of the Lilydale district centres' news in one hit, dozens of the old families rating a mention.
LILYDALE
THERE was a generous response throughout the district to the appeal for goods to be sent to Launceston for the annual appeal day of the Northern Tasmanian Bush Nursing Association. The goods were collected by Mesdames V. C. Arnold and W. Wilson and Mr. and Mrs. M. Kelp, and were packed by Mr. and Mrs. H. Hope, Mesdames E. Franklin, F. T. Ferguson, L. A. Procter and Mr. R. L. Bardenhagen. Badges were sold by some of the senior scholars at the Area School.
A total of 41 dozen eggs was donated and also a large quantity of jam, sauce, pickles, vegetables and other articles. The sum of £22/18/- was received from subscriptions and the sale of badges--an increase of £4 compared with the previous year.
The bush nurse (Sister M. Walsh) who has been in Adelaide for about three months, is due to return soon. Sister B. J. Smith, of Launceston, is relieving.
NABOWLA
REV. J. E. ATKINS presided at the birthday party of the Church of England Ladies' Guild. Items were rendered by Misses Kaye John son, Alison Orchard, Joyce Loosmore, Mesdames G. Bird, G. Salier, Masters, Terence Allenby, and G. Birch. Mesdames J. Gofton and K. Propsting played accompaniments.
The president (Mrs. J. Partridge) was presented with a posy of flowers by Mrs. Propsting and guild babies were given a little present by Robin Partridge. A birthday cake was presented by Mrs. J. Partridge. Mrs. J. I. Partridge and Mrs. C. Allen served afternoon tea. Mrs. T. Smith, New Norfolk, is staying with her mother, Mrs. A. G.
LALLA
The annual Presbyterian fair at Lalla was held in Mr. Walter's packing shed. The Warden (Mr. L. A. Procter, M.L.C.) opened the fair, and was presented with a buttonhole by lan Elmer. Marcia New ton presented Mrs. Procter with a bouquet. There were many visit ors from Launceston, Karoola and Lilydale. Stallholders were: Jum- ble, Mrs. V. Burke and Miss Doris Brooks; cakes and savoury, Mrs. J. D. Burke; sweets, Misses Yvonne Penfold and Florence Johnstone; ice cream and fruit salad, Mesdames C. Barrett, H. C. Walker, and Miss Zelda Burke; afternoon tea, Mesdames C. Brooks, J. Walker, W. J. Walker, W. J. Penfold, Misses J. and M. McGaughey. A concert was held at night.
Those who helped with the programme were Mesdames L. Dor nauf, W. J. Penfold, Misses Y. Penfold, F. Johnstone, D. Brooks, Z. Burke, E. Dickson, S. Brewer, J. Chick, Messrs B. Maher, C. Cord well, S. F.. D. and W. Penfold, A. Burke and K. Dickson. Supper was served. Takings for the day amounted to £18/12/- clear.
Mesdames Bean and Wardlaw, St. Marys, have been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. Walker. Mr. Mervyn Cellars, Benalla (Vic.) has been visiting his sister, Mrs. W. J. Penfold. Mrs. Penfold has also had her niece, Miss F. Johnstone, of Colac (Vic.), visiting her. Miss Doreen Talbot, Launceston, has been spending a few days with her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Noel Adams. Mrs. E. Barrett, Launceston, recently visited her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. C. Barrett.
PIPER'S RIVER
A LARGE number of residents assembled to welcome the Governor (Sir Hugh Binney) when he visited the state school at Pipers River. The vice-regal party was received by Mr. and Mrs. Little. It was the first time a State Governor had visited the school. His Excellency addressed the children out lining his career in the Navy until he was promoted to admiral. June Snare presented Lady Binney with a posy, and Raeburn Cameron Smith thanked the Governor on behalf of the school children for his visit. Morning tea was served by the Parents and Friends' Association.
Miss Carleen Barber is in the Launceston General Hospital. Miss Betty Snare spent a few days recently with relatives at Launceston. Misses Jessie and Aileen Baxter have been visiting their parents. Mrs. P. King has been visiting Cressy.
Mr. C. Hurst met with an accident at his sawmill when he cut his arm. He had to have several stitches inserted.
AN Invitation party was given by Mr. and Mrs. H. Shipton in honour of their son and daughter in law, Mr. and Mrs. D. Shipton, who were recently married. Mr. W. L. Shipton was MC. for dancing. Music was supplied by Miss Betty Bird, Mesdames A. L. Counsel and W. Timperon. Mr. Harry Bird, on be half of the guests. thanked Mr. and Mrs. H. Shipton for the enjoyable evening.
UNDERWOOD
A DANCE for the hall funds was held at Underwood. Total takings amounted to over £12. Winners of novelties were--Mr. D Garland and Mrs. B. Hammersley (Monto Carlo); Mr. Pickerell and Mrs Blyth confetti dance; Mr. K. Johnston, chocolate waltz. Door keepers were Messrs. T. Tynan and Shegog. Supper was served by Mesdames F. Underlin, A. Walker, T. Tynan and C. Denman and Mr. P. J. Box. Cordials were sold by Mr. F. Underlin. Mr. T. Whiting was M.C.
