The Monthly meeting of the Lilydale Council was held on Saturday. Present Councillors Procter, Watson, Sulzberger, Rice, Dadson, Archer, Saunders, and White. The re-elected councillors signed the usual declarations and were welcomed back to the Council by Councillor Archer.
The Warden's allowance was fixed at £35, the same as last year. Councillor J. B. White was re-elected treasurer, and the allowance was fixed at £5.
The Warden stated that the new award for municipal employees was more than the Council could afford to pay. It was resolved to employ the Council Clerk at part time at the same salary as last year.
Councillor Archer explained what tenders had been accepted for stone on the main road. The action of Councillor Archer was confirmed, on the motion of Councillor White, seconded by Councillor Sulzberger.
It was decided to divide the aid to road rates subsidy equally between the Wards.
The chairman of the Main Roads Board wrote re road through the Lilydale township. Left in the Warden's hands to attend to same.
Mr M. French wrote regarding some draining that needed doing at Karoola. Left in Councillor Dadson's hands to attend to same.
Road near 0'Doherty's and Flynn's, and some table draining at Lower Turner's Marsh was also left in Councillor Dadson's hands to attend to.
Messrs. Moses and Featonby wrote with reference to the proposed new road at Greta. It resolved that the Council adhere to their former recommendation.
Inspector Casboult wrote regarding bridge on the Piper-road. Left in Councillor Rice hands to attend to.
Messrs. Turner and McLennan wrote regarding a vote on Turner's lane. It was resolved to apply to the Public Works Department for permission to carry out this vote.
Miss Cahill wrote residing charges for the Karoola Hall. The clerk stated that same had been forwarded. It was resolved to back up the caretaker in the stand he has taken in the matter, he only asked for the correct fees.
The Farmers and Stockowners' Association wrote regarding the starling pest. It was resolved to obtain further information before making any recommendation in the matter.
The secretary of the Lilydale branch of the R.S. and S.I.L.A. wrote, stating that the branch did not intend to take any further action in the matter of the war memorial. The letter was received. The manager and branch manager of the Government Insurance Office wrote, thanking the Council for placing their business with them.
Applications were received from the City Cycling Club, the Invermay Cycling Club, and Henry Bills and Co., asking permission to hold races on the roads at Newnham. Councillor Charles White moved. "That permission be granted." Seconded by Councillor Sulzberger. Councillor Archer moved as an amendment "That they be given permission to race on the Alanvale-road only, as races on the main roads were dangerous to the travelling public." The amendment was seconded by Councillor Dadson and carried. Councillors Archer, Rice, Watson, Saunders, and Dadson voting for it.
The Warden and Council Clerk were appointed delegates to the Municipal Conference to be held in Hobart on May 18. Mr S. Jackson wrote with reference to the telephone at Lilydale.
The secretary of the Launceston Marine Board wrote in regard to the reconstitution of the board, and stated that the recent legislation was not in accord with the wishes of the board.
The secretary of the Northern Tasmanian Bush Nursing Association wrote with reference to a bush nurse, and asked to be supplied with the names of all returned soldiers in the municipality. Left in the clerk's hands to attend to same.
The bank pass book showed a debit of £278 2s 10d.
Accounts amounting to £258 10s 8 were passed for payment.
