NEWS OF COUNTRY CENTRES
LilydaleAn extension of the work of the church by holding services at the old mining township of Lisle and an improvement in the financial position were disclosed at the meeting of the Board of Management of the Lilydale Presbyterian Church. The secretary (Mr. V. Arnold) reported that £24 had been raised towards the reduction of the debt on the vestry.
Mr. Hugh Wilson read a financial statement, which showed that the debit balance brought forward from the previous year had been substantially reduced.
It was decided to effect necessary work at the manse, and to renew the fence between the church and the school residence by voluntary labour. A letter was received from the Lilydale Council regarding guarantees in connection with the proposed extension of electricity to the district. It was decided to give guarantees for both the church and the manse. Complaints were made regarding the behaviour of some persons who attend the vestry to play ping-pong. It was decided that the vestry must be closed punctually at 10.30 p.m. A vote of appreciation of the work of the home missionary (Mr. R. A. Norris) was recorded. Members were entertained to supper by Mrs. Norris.
It is many years since the Lilydale district has experienced such delightful Autumn weather as that of the past week or two. The days have been warm and sunny with an absence of wind. Orchardists have been able to carry on picking and packing operations without interruption.
Residents are hoping that the work of renewing the Underwood bridge, on the main road between Lilydale and Launceston will be put in hand at an early date. This bridge was destroyed by floods on December 11 last, and since then there have been several narrow escapes from serious accidents.
When returning from Launceston recently a car driven by Mr. L. G. Youl, of Underwood, who was accompanied by Mrs. Youl, got out of control when approaching the temporary bridge. The guard fence stopped the car from going into the Piper River. The car, badly damaged, was pulled out by a team of horses.LebrinaWhist drives in aid of funds for St. Patrick's Church are popular, and are patronised by all denominations. A working bee was held at the Methodist Church. The leaders of the movement (Messrs. S. Higgs, of Bullark, and W. Kendall, of Lilydale), who also organised the function, are well pleased with the improvements effected.
