APPLICANTS FOR NEW HOUSES.John Henry Hodgson applied for a license for the Bangor Club Hotel, Bangor. The Superintendent of the Selby police objected, considering the house was not required. Mr. Davis produced a petition in favour, signed by 60 farmers, etc., and stated the house would be more especially for the use of the 200 quarrymen employed, and that there was not a licensed house within six miles. Mr. G. Thureau, Inspector of Mines, said such accommodation was badly needed. The applicant stated the hotel would be under the auspices of the Slate Quarry Company. To this several members of the board objected, as encouraging the truck system. The license was refused on this ground, although several members were in favour of it if conducted independently.
Thomas Wadham applied for a license for the Retreat Hotel, Invermay. The Superintendent of the Selby Police objected on the ground that the house was not required being near to the borders of Launceston, and a licensed house was close by. Mr. Davis urged that the contiguous licensed house was not convenient for visitors, and being old required to be replaced. He produced a petition from 168 land-owners, etc., in favour of the license being granted on the ground of its suitableness to attract visitors to a suburban residence. Mr. E. G. Miller submitted a petition against the license being granted.
Messrs. Edgell and Whitfeld said their opinions had changed in favour of the application. The license was granted by four votes to two.
