SPIRIT OF DAY LACKING IF USED AS SPUR TO MILITARY INTEREST"To-day's gathering may possess certain military features; but we miss altogether the spirit of Anzac Day and fail to understand the occasion if we use it merely as a spur to our military enthusiasm," said the Rev. F. C. Bremer, at the Lilydale celebrations.
Although it was threatening early in the day, Lilydale was favoured with fine weather yesterday.
Children who arrived by train marched to the recreation ground, led by the 1st Lilydale Troop of Boy Scouts and the South Launceston S.A. Band. The children first attended the opening memorial service at 11 a.m. The chairman was Mr. R. L. Bardenhagen, president of the Lilydale sub-branch of the R.S. and S.I.L.A.
He stated that the Allan Wardlaw memorial prize for the best essay, on "Trees and their value to the state" would be awarded on Empire Day. He also said that it was the intention of the branch to plant a tree each year in memory of their late patron, Mr. Ward law.
After the singing of the National Anthem and the hymn "O God, Our Help in Ages Past," prayer was offered by Rev. L. E. Dando (Church of Eng land). This was followed by another hymn and the 91st Psalm, read by Mr. R. Alison-Norris (Presbyterian Church).
The Methodist Missionary (Mr. L. G. Darling) introduced the speaker for the day, Rev. F. C. Bremer, who is connexional secretary for the Methodist Church in Tasmania.Memories RevivedMr. Bremer said Anzac Day revived memories of 1915, when, at Gallipoli, our men proved themselves worthy sons of the Empire. It was pride of rule, territorial ambition, and economic greed which developed the German offensive and covered the world with the dark pall of death. In the Commonwealth 60,000 hearts and homes were bereaved, while thousands more were left to look back through a mist of tears upon this holocaust of war. Little further was needed to emphasise the crass stupidity, the brutal futility, the awful inadequacy of war as a factor in the settlement of international disputes. Nations to-day, by means of power politics, were seeking to prove the right of might.
"We must play our part," he said, "that the world shall increasingly see that high spiritual principles and worthy ethical conduct are the true foundations of nationhood."
After the singing of the "Recessional," the Union Jack was hoisted to the top of the pole by Mr. Peter Chick, an original Anzac. The Last Post was sounded by Messrs. C. Lumley, N. Reeve, and J. Brown, of the South Launceston S.A. Band. The patron, Mr. L. Dadson, was also on the dais.Sports ResultsAfter the children had been supplied with lunch a varied programme of sports was supervised by Mr. E. D. Weston, assisted by Messrs. E. F. Dolbey and W. H. Hammersley as stewards and Messrs. L. Dadson, W. H. Watkins, and W. Youl as judges. Mr. E. A. Arnold was prize distributer. Results: Boys' Race, 75 yards, 10 to 12 years -Monty Mitchell 1, R.
