Lilydale is the centre of the apple growing district in the north, and its shows generally command a vast amount of interest. Yesterday's exhibition, which was the eleventh held under the auspices of the Lilydale Farmers' and Fruitgrowers' Association, was no exception to the rule, the attendance being quite up to former occasions. The special train from Launceston carried a very large contingent of city visitors, who generally look forward with pleasure to this annual outing.
The exhibition, on the whole, was up to the usual standard. The entries may not have been quite so large, but what was lacking in this respect was quite made up for in quality.
One of the main attractions was a district exhibit, consisting of all kinds of farm produce and fruits. This was arranged by the members of the committee, all of whom exhibited products of their own growing. The display was a very creditable one, and was an excellent advertisement for the district, from an agricultural point of view. Amongst the many exhibits was one by Mr. J. Power, who had on view some White Elephant potatoes, the result of a second crop within nine months. The apples were seen at their very best, those commanding most attention being Five Crowns, Adams' Pearmains, Cox's Orange Pippins, Scarlet Nonpareils, Jonathans, Sturmers, Hoovers, Prince Alfreds, Armoral, Wellington, and Anne Elizabeths.
Disappointment was expressed at the absence of the usual fine apple trophy of Mr. W. H. West, who has carried off the prize for about four or five years in succession. It is understood that the reason he was not an exhibitor was because he disapproved of the alteration made in the conditions. In previous years an exhibitor in this class was bound to grow all the fruit shown on his trophy, but the rules have been so altered that a competitor can procure the fruit from whatever source he pleases. The experiment, if it might be termed such, was evidently not a success, as Mr. W. C. Sulzberger, of Lilydale, had the field to himself. Mr. Sulzberger also had on view an attractive agricultural trophy. The vegetables made a fine show, the potatoes in particular giving the judge a very difficult task in awarding the tickets.
There was also a very good display of cereals and home-made products, while the needlework formed a conspicuous exhibit, and came in for a large amount of attention from the fair sex.
