Government Vote Sought
The monthly meeting of the Lilydale Council was held on Saturday. The council clerk at St. Leonards (Mr. S. J. Manning) wrote, stating that his council had decided to make further inquiries before asking for a Government vote on the section of the Prosser's Forest road in the municipality. The tender of Mr. M. P. Collins, of Karoola, £65 10s, was accepted for 50 chains of gravelling on the Prosser's Forest road.
It was reported that Mr. R. J. McGowan had submitted a petition, addressed to the Minister for Lands and Works (Major T. H. Davies), asking for a vote of £200 to open up the Lilydale-Patersonia road round the side of Mount Arthur. The petition, which had been signed by more than 120 persons, pointed out that £100 had been made available for the portion of this road in the St Leonards municipality, and a further vote was required to open up the Lilydale end. It was decided to forward the petition to the Minister for Lands and Works.
DAMAGE TO ROAD.
The Minister for Lands and Works wrote, stating he had received a complaint from Nabowla to the effect that heavy machinery was : being carried over a road at Nabowla, which was closed to timber-carting, and that the carriage of the machinery was damaging the road. Councillor H. C. Watson reported that portion of a sawmill had been carted into Nabowla to prevent lt being stolen. It was carted during the fine weather, and the road was not damaged.
The Director of Public Works wrote, stating that the Golconda-Bridport road was in need of repairs, and asked whether the council would contribute £33 towards the cost of the work. Councillors pointed out that this road carried heavy tourist traffic during the summer months, and only portion of it was in the Lilydale municipality. It was decided to find the sum of £20 on the £1 for £1 principle towards putting the road in order.
INFECTIOUS DISEASE FEES.
Councillor G. E. Archer moved: - That the Launceston Public Hospital Board be asked to reduce fees for the treatment of infectious diseases from 13s 6d to 11s 6d a day as it had already done for the Launceston City Council. The motion was seconded by Councillor C. W. McCarthy, and carried.
WATTLE DAY APPEAL.
The council clerk (Mr. W. Wilson) reported that the secretary of the Tasmanian Wattle League (Alderman W. W. Osborne, of Hobart) had called on him the previous day in connection with the Wattle Day Appeal for the Tasmanian Sanatorium. The Sanatorium was urgently in need of funds. It was decided to obtain 100 badges, and councillors promised to endeavour to dispose of badges in their districts.
KAROOLA HALL
The Public Works Department wrote in regard to the work required to complete the public hall at Karoola. Councillor C. W. McCarthy stated the Karoola Hall committee was prepared to raise the sum of £45 towards the cost of the work it was decided to endeavour to have the work put in hand as early as possible.
NOXIOUS WEEDS.
Mr. F. H. Wade wrote, directing the attention of the council to the spread of gorse and hemlock in the district. He had endeavoured to keep his property free from noxious woods, and found it a hopeless task, as the seeds were washed on to his property by every flood. It was decided to ask the State Government to have gorse declared a noxious wood in the municipality, and to take stops to have hemlock destroyed.
UNREGISTERED DOGS.
Councillor G. E. Archer stated that he considered there were a large number of unregistered dogs in the municipality. The council clerk stated that legal proceedings would be taken against those who had failed to register their dogs.
RABBIT DESTRUCTION.
The secretary of the North-Eastern Municipal League (Mr. H. Spotswood) wrote, stating that a meeting of the league would be held at Scottsdale on September 20. The meeting was mainly called to give consideration to a simultaneous spring campaign for the destruction of rabbits. It was resolved that the inspector (Mr. R. D. Box) represent the council at the conference.
