Shepherds – Harrisons – Brown – Griffins – Farrellys family trees are plotted by Kevin Shepherd at Van Diemens Land journeys.
One photo can speak volumes. The bridesmaids and groom’s best man often tells you about family links.
[I will post the wedding photo here when I clear it with David Brown.]
L to R in photo: Edna Bennett, the groom Reginald Norman Brown, Alfred Hammersley (brother of bride), Muriel Hammersley (the bride), Geoff Shepherd (son of Seth), his sister Grace Shepherd (later Mrs Vern Smith). The Shepherds were first cousins through Reg Brown's mother, Alice Shepherd.
I wonder who else would be willing to post wedding photos here and explain to us who is who so we can record the history of the families of Lilydale. There is a great collection of Northeast Tasmanian wedding photos at From 1900 to 1905 Historic Wedding Photos on Flickr. There is a Bird, a McCarthy and a Wells photo in there, not sure yet if Lilydale related or not. I found the marriage of Arthur Shepherd and Emily Eliza Arnold at Lilydale in Tasmania in 1902.

[More to come later.] I hear of ordinary working people spending tens of thousands of dollars on weddings these days. In times past, dresses were often made by a family member or by a talented seamstress like Eva Chick. The catering was all home done or a local women’s group as still today with the CWA.
They say in 2015 that newspapers are dying and that is a shame for many reasons, not least of which is the rich descriptions of bridal costumes, receptions and honeymoon destinations and all the other doings that make up our lives and our culture. Will Facebook be as convenient to catalogue and search in a century?
