William, son of Isaac Arnold and Lucy Hill, was married to Alice. He was working in Derby when he enlisted at the age of 31. Alice and her three daughters (right) came to live in Lilydale after William's death. Despite the community's kindness, Alice found it very hard and ultimately left Tasmania to find employment on a rural New South Wales station.
